Fishing Report December 29th, 2019

As we round out the year of 2019, first and foremost I want to thank all of the guests who came aboard for a day of fishing with me.  I hope everyone has had a merry Christmas.  With that said, let’s talk some fishing!

This month has produced some great fishing for redfish and speckled trout.  The redfish bite has been great all across the board.  The water temps have been nearly perfect lately, and the fish just keep chewing.  Look for fish to be schooled up this time of year.  We have been producing some great numbers while redfishing both the bottom and on a cork.  Some of our bi-catch while redfishing lately includes sheepshead, flounder, black drum, and the occasional snook.  Live shrimp and cut mullet have been my go to when it comes to bait.  Nothing beats sunny and mid 60’s weather when your hooked up on some fish!  The next few months will carry this fishing pattern and beautiful weather, and you don’t want to miss out.

Trout fishing has fully “settled in” for our winter here in crystal river.  When I say settled in, I mean the fish are piled up and no longer spread thin in different areas.  Now is the time of year to be targeting trout, and they are healthy as I”ve seen this year. This week on a charter, I had 4 guests aboard and they filled their 20 fish limit in under an hour, the first 15 keepers being in about 20 minutes.  You can tell they’ve been eating good and are “fat and sassy”, it’s a great thing to see a fishery so lively.  My guests have been catching trout both fishing the bottom, and on popping corks.  My biggest tip is to fish the area accordingly.  Deep water is best to jig the bottom, when in shallower water employ a popping cork some days.  I like to use both to start the day, and when one method is working better than the other, I’ll make the switch to whats working. You guys can go check out my new youtube channel and see exactly what we’ve been up to.

That wraps up my fishing report for December, and the new year is just around the corner.  I cant wait to see what 2020 brings, and all the memories on the water to come. I have plenty of dates to go fishing open in January!  Give me a call 352-634-2901

Thanks and tight lines until next time,

Captain Colin
