Cold water... Hot bite in the crystal river area!

Let’s talk some fishing in the Crystal river area, and what some of my recent clients have been catching!

I’ll get right down to it, the Redfish bite has been excellent for me the last few weeks.  The wintertime is about in full effect, and the fish are finally patterned in!  What this means is there’s not much guessing where the fish are day to day anymore.  Live shrimp under a cork or on the bottom has worked wonders on a few recent fishing charters lately.  Monday morning I had some new guests aboard and what a day of fishing we had.  The first stop yielded a limit of redfish in 3 casts.  We spent the rest of the day catching more redfish out of schools in the back country.  I love this time of year because the fish are settled in again.  This means I almost know exactly right where fish are sitting down to feet.  However, during transitional weather periods, such as early winter or first of spring, the fish are moving constantly.  Now this doesn’t mean we don’t catch any, it just means some days you might have to search a little harder to find that school you’ve been on.

The trout have been showing up in great waves here and there.  A few days last week we really “got into them” and had a great time.  Jigging off the bottom has been the trick, and my go-to soft plastic, a mirrolure lil’ jhon.  I did have a few days where a keeper trout was hard to come by, but the redfish have made up for it on those days.   Give it a few more weeks, and I believe the trout will truly set up shop for winter.
